El “Réquiem Alemán” (Ein deutsches Requiem), es una de las obras más importantes y emotivas de Johannes Brahms, un canto de consuelo y esperanza que se aparta de la tradición litúrgica del Réquiem católico. A diferencia de los réquiems clásicos, que están en latín y se centran en la oración por los muertos, Brahms eligió usar textos bíblicos en alemán para crear una pieza que ofrece una meditación sobre el duelo y la redención. La obra se compone de siete movimientos y está escrita para coro, solistas y orquesta. Adicionalmente Brahms escribió una versión que en lugar de orquesta lleva piano a cuatro manos, pues esto facilita su divulgación y estudio. Brahms evita el texto tradicional del réquiem y, en su lugar, utiliza pasajes de las Escrituras que enfocan la atención en el consuelo y la esperanza para los vivos y los muertos. La estructura de la obra alterna entre secciones corales majestuosas y momentos más íntimos con solistas, creando un equilibrio entre la expresión colectiva del dolor y la reflexión personal.
